How the ABR Test Works

During the test, small electrodes are gently placed on the child’s head and near the ears. These electrodes are connected to specialized computer equipment that records the electrical activity generated by the auditory pathway.

Soft sounds or clicks are presented through earphones or insert earphones. As the sounds travel through the auditory system, the electrodes detect the resulting electrical responses. The audiologist analyzes specific response patterns, or neurological markers, to estimate hearing sensitivity at different frequencies.

For accurate results, the patient needs to remain relaxed and still. Babies and young children can often be tested while they are naturally asleep. In some cases, additional medical support may be considered if a child cannot remain still enough for reliable testing.
