Tympanometry is a quick, painless, and objective hearing assessment used to evaluate how well the middle ear and eardrum are functioning. The test measures the movement of the eardrum in response to changes in air pressure and sound, helping audiologists identify conditions that may affect hearing.
During the test, an instrument called a tympanometer is used. A small probe is gently placed at the entrance of the ear canal to create an airtight seal. The probe contains three important components:- Air port: Changes the air pressure inside the ear canal.
- Speaker port: Produces a soft tone that travels toward the eardrum.
- Microphone port: Measures and records how the eardrum responds to changes in pressure and sound.
How Tympanometry Works
The ear consists of three main sections: the outer ear, middle ear, and inner ear. Sound enters through the outer ear and travels down the ear canal to the eardrum. The eardrum and middle-ear structures then transmit these vibrations toward the inner ear, where they are converted into signals that the brain recognizes as sound.
Tympanometry focuses primarily on the middle-ear system. It can help identify conditions such as fluid behind the eardrum, problems with eardrum mobility, negative middle-ear pressure, and other abnormalities affecting middle-ear function.
Tympanometry for Children and Adults
Tympanometry can be performed at any age and is particularly useful for children who may be prone to middle-ear infections or fluid buildup. Middle-ear fluid can temporarily affect hearing and, if left untreated, may interfere with speech and language development.
